Light Gauge Steel Frames

Light Gauge Steel Frames

A light gauge steel construction is very similar to wood-framed construction in that thinner steel sections replace the wood framing members. These steel sections used here are known as cold-formed sections. This is distinct from thicker hot-rolled sections, which are formed when the steel is still hot. The shape of cold-formed steel is created by pushing thin steel sheets through an array of rollers, with each roller altering the shape of the steel slightly and transforming a flat sheet of steel into a C- or S-shaped piece.

Steel Frame Construction follows the frame platform system used in house construction. Connecting members by self-tapping self-drilling screws.

Contractors typically request pre-punched sections, which are sections with factory-made holes that allow pipes and wires to pass through walls easily.

The steel used here will be coated with zinc or a mix of aluminium and zinc to guard against corrosion.

The steel thickness ranges from approximately 1 to 3 millimetres for structural sections and between 1 and 2 millimetres for non-structural units. The sizes of the members roughly match wood parts: 2″x4″ and 2″x6″ are the most common sizes.

Steel frame construction could be used for non-structural framing for exterior cladding or interior partitions. This type of construction was initially designed to create interior compartments in offices.

Advantages of Light Gauge Steel Construction

  • Structures made from light gauge steel possess many advantages.
  • It can be moulded into any shape and covered and insulated using a broad selection of different materials.
  • It is very easy to modify or alter this structure at any time during its lifetime.
  • A wide range of products and systems is suitable for this type of construction.
  • Structures made from light gauge materials are not combustible and are a legal requirement for some facilities.
  • Structures made from light gauge steel will not shrink, rot or warp like wood structures. Therefore, they are suitable in locations with a risk of termite attacks.

Disadvantages of Light Gauge Steel Construction

  • Light-framed structures allow sound to pass through more quickly than solid masonry construction.
  • Light gauge steel is likely to decrease in strength when exposed to the threat of fire. Therefore, a good fire protection system must be employed. The simplest protection method against fire is to protect the steel with fire-rated wallboard or sheeting.
